  2. Yaris Crossover Interior

The Yaris Cross is based on the all-new Yaris hatchback and features some true SUV DNA sourced from Toyota’s extensive experience in the matter. Compared to the Yaris (not our rebadged Mazda 2), the Yaris Cross is 240mm longer overall for more interior space. Ground clearance is raised by 30mm over that of the donner hatchback. The Toyota Yaris Cross (Japanese: トヨタ・ヤリスクロス, Toyota Yarisu Kurosu) is a subcompact crossover SUV produced by the Japanese automaker Toyota, using the Yaris nameplate primarily for the Japanese, European, and Australian markets. It is built on GA-B platform as the XP210 series Yaris and positioned between the Raize and C-HR in Toyota's crossover SUV lineup.

The new Toyota Yaris Cross will be the brand’s smallest and most affordable SUV. Here’s everything you need to know about it...

It's funny how fashions change. In 2012, Toyota discontinued its last small SUV, the Urban Cruiser, after three years of sluggish sales (although the fact its name made it sound like the kind of person who engages in dubious night-time activities probably didn't help its popularity). However, fast forward to today and cars of this sort are in huge demand, which is why the Japanese brand is preparing to launch a successor: the Toyota Yaris Cross.

As its name suggests, it's closely related to the fourth-generation Yaris hatchback, which went on sale this autumn. But just as you wouldn’t mistake the rival Nissan Juke for a Micra, despite the two models having plenty in common mechanically, the Yaris Cross gets its own distinct look.

Other small SUVs that it will have to beat include the Peugeot 2008, Renault Captur and Volkswagen T-Cross, plus our 2020 Car of the Year, the Ford Puma.

Toyota has become synonymous with hybrid power in recent years, and the Yaris Cross continues its march in that direction, with the only engine option a 1.5-litre petrol that works in conjunction with an electric motor to produce a combined 114bhp.

It’s the same setup that you get in the latest Yaris hatchback. And the good news is it impresses in that car, switching between petrol and electric power almost imperceptibly. Refinement is further enhanced by a new CVT automatic gearbox, which is much less inclined to send the engine revs soaring than other CVTs.

Despite their rugged looks, most small SUVs aren’t actually available with four-wheel drive, but the Yaris Cross is an exception, with that version still emitting less than 135g/km of CO2 in official WLTP tests. Front-wheel-drive versions, meanwhile, emit less than 120g/km.

2021 Toyota Yaris Cross interior

As with the exterior, the Yaris Cross gets its own interior design, although this isn't quite so distinct; the centre console is deeper than the Yaris hatchback's and it features more gloss black plastic, but details like the air vents and the metallic strip running across the upper dashboard are carried over.

The touchscreen infotainment system also appears to be the same, which would mean sluggish responses and dated graphics, although you do get handy shortcut buttons, and you can bypass Toyota's own software thanks to the presence of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone mirroring.

2021

We're yet to sit in the Yaris Cross, so can't comment on passenger space. However, the boot features useful touches such as a height-adjustable floor and straps for holding smaller items of luggage in place. You can also have a powered tailgate that opens automatically when you aim a kick beneath the rear bumper – useful when you've got your hands full of shopping.

The Yaris Cross sits beneath the C-HR in Toyota's SUV range, and with that model costing from £26,250, a starting price in the low 20s seems likely. This would also keep the Yaris Cross competitive with the award-winning Puma, which costs from £22,0305

The Yaris Cross is one of 14 cars in contention for the 2021 What Car? Reader Award, which will go to the upcoming model that people are most excited about. You can cast your vote here.

2022 Toyota Yaris Cross – Toyota’s Smallest Crossover. The upcoming 2022 Toyota Yaris Cross is something completely new on the markets. It is basically a better-looking C-HR variant, made for Europe. Impressions are more than positive and Yaris Cross will become Toyota’s smallest crossover. It will ride on the same platform as the hatchback variant but the architecture will be extended.

Still, the Yaris Cross is shorter than the C-HR model. The Japanese manufacturer will offer a hybrid powertrain and plenty of tech goodies. Its arrival has been scheduled for this fall and it will go on sale in Europe and Japan. The price should be very affordable.

Hybrid Engine Specs

The all-new 2022 Toyota Yaris Cross will use a hybrid powertrain. Of course, you can buy a regular version with a 1.5-liter gasoline engine. A hybrid model is the highlight and it will represent the most popular option without any doubts.

The hybrid system deploys a three-cylinder engine that makes 116 horsepower. AWD system is available and Toyota also offers both six-speed manual and CVT automatic transmission. The base model will deploy a standard front-wheel-drive setup, like its hatchback sibling.

2022 Yaris Cross Dimensions and Exterior Design

As we said, a new 2022 Toyota Yaris Cross will ride on the same platform as the Yaris hatchback. The architecture is extended and Cross variant is 164.5 inches long. It is 69.5 inches wide and 61.5 inches tall. Interestingly, the C-HR model is still seven inches longer and inch wider. Yaris Cross will become Toyota’s smallest crossover and it will wear interesting and funky design. Like the Yaris hatchback, Cross variant will introduce the same body lines.

You can expect plenty of customization and we recommend to skip the base trim level. Mid-grade trim levels are a better option with an LED lighting system and a two-tone exterior color scheme. Yaris Cross looks stylish and we really like optional 18-inch alloy wheels. The small crossover comes with a sportier vibe and the rear part looks very modern.

Interior To Be Shared With the Hatchback Yaris

Yaris Cross 2021

The forthcoming 2022 Toyota Yaris Cross comes with unique interior design. The cabin looks very upscale and more stylish than the hatchback version. The center console is pushed deeper which provides slightly more room upfront. The same dash comes with gloss black plastic materials and it looks modern.

The air vents are featuring metallic accents and overall, we like this interior for many reasons. Legroom is ample but taller rear passengers will have some trouble, especially on the longer trips. There will be room for five passengers. Toyota will introduce more equipment than in the Yaris hatchback version and larger displays. We ‘d suggest you to buy optional ambient lighting that looks amazing.

2022 Toyota Yaris Cross Price and Release Date

This small crossover won’t arrive in the US for another two or three years. Instead, a new 2022 Toyota Yaris Cross will go on sale in Japan and Europe. This crossover will firstly arrive in Japan this fall and then in Europe in the first quarter of 2022. The price will start slightly below $25,000. The main competitors should be Ford Puma and Renault Captur.
