Green gulch sells their flowers, vegetables, and greens at the ferry plaza. What is really cool is you can hike thru their fields of Kale, lettuces, swiss chard, and wild flowers. Most people take for granted what they eat or are somewhat disassociated from the process.Like Me!! Green Gulch Ranch has been involved with cattle since the 60’s. George Wheelwright, the original owner, started his herd with Registered Horned Herefords, purchased in Hereford, England. In the 70’s he moved the ranch from Stinson Beach, outside of San Francisco, to Bordertown, just north of Reno. In 1974, the ranch was purchased by Robert Mathews, who continued the registered operation, until his sudden passing in 1976.
With the purchase of the new farm ground property in the year 2000, Green Gulch Ranch acquired over 1500 acres of tillable land, with 1000 currently in production. Originally, this was devoted to high quality alfalfa for the dairy market in the Sacramento Valley. Ten years ago, the ranch started growing grass hay for the local horse market. Soon the demand outpaced the 60 acres and another 120 was added to the mix. Now over two thirds of the ground is in grass hay production.

Green Gulch Ranch is private hunting preserve located outside of Reno, NV., in the beautiful Sierra Valley. This unique property of 3800 acres has some very diverse habitat from open grass meadows to sage covered hillsides. The creek, that meanders through the meadow provides additional cover of willows and wild rose. With this variety of suitable hunting areas, we can match the terrain to ones physical limitations or preferences. Our goal is to offer you the most enjoyable experience, while chasing our fast flying birds.
Besides the exceptional hunting, Green Gulch Ranch also offers a variety of shooting opportunities with a rifle/pistol range and two trap and skeet fields. Both of these facilities are open year round, weather depending, and offer exciting challenges to the avid shooter.

Welcome to Green Gulch Ranch

Green Gulch Ranch is a historic property located in the unique Sierra Valley of California. Originally settled by the Lafranchini family in the 1860s, the property is now owned and operated by three generations of Harrison’s. The ranch, originally settled by Italian Swiss immigrants, use to supply milk and butter to the miners in Virginia City, a two-day wagon ride at the time. Two large hand-hewn barns still stand on the property today, attesting to the fortitude and ingenuity of the early settlers. The first, built in 1894, included dairy stanchions along one side, with an overhead rail to carry the buckets to the milk room. The north end of the barn had a separate area to stable and feed the draft horses. The rest of the structure was devoted to hay storage. In the early 1900s, a second barn was erected for additional hay storage. Both barns are still in use today. The original, two-story farmhouse, built in 1926, is used by members of the family.
